WEATHER

In Florida summers are hot and muggy and all tours will be close to refreshing rivers and springs.

Early spring (the middle of March to early May) is the best time for viewing and photographing emerging plants and flowers. Likewise late summer and early fall flowers can still be seen in October.

The fall and early winter (September 15th to January 15th) is when the rivers are normally at their lowest and we have beautiful fall colors (for Florida) along the rivers and in the hardwood forests. Some color can last from October to December. Fall and early winter is paradise. This time of year the migratory birds begin passing through and it is the perfect time for birders to photograph and record their passing. It is also the time when those pesky insects are the least active.

Although winters are mild, be prepared for chilly evenings in the late fall and winter months. Winter weather fronts make for wild swings in temperatures, over a weeks time temperatures can go from 70 degrees and sunny to 45 degrees and blustery. Although not the rainy season, winter rains are usually short duration and high intensity, bringing aquifer and river levels up. The ecology of the region is very dependent on sufficient rains falling in the winter to recover from the dryer fall weather. In winter be prepared for higher water levels. It is in the winter that a clear understanding of the important relationship between the pine flatwoods, river systems and aquifers can be better understood.
